Dementia Special Care Units in Residential Care Communities: United States, 2010

The NCHS data brief 134 from November 2013 outlines the latest statistics on dementia special care units in the United States.

Key findings from the report:


  • 17% of residential care communities had a dementia special care unit (2010)
  • 13% of beds in a residential care community was for the dementia special care unit (2010)
  • Residential care communities with a dementia special care unit were more likely than those without to have more beds, be chain-affiliated, and be purposely built as a residential care community
  • Residential care communities with a dementia special care unit were more likely to be located in the Northeast, in a metropolitan area and less likely to be in the West
