Professional Boundaries and the Nurse-Client Relationship

The College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia has published guidelines for their registered nurses which outline professional boundaries in nurse-client relationships.

These guidelines are intended for nurses, but the information and recommendations in can apply across health professions. Although not exclusively geriatric or long-term care focused many of the examples given within the guidelines are from long-term care settings where it is more common that the health care providers will know the patient/resident and their family for extended periods of time.

Of particular interest in this document is a table which clearly delineates differing behaviour and parameters between professional and personal relationships.
