Recommended Treatment Strategies for Clinicians Managing Older Patients with HIV

As a result of effective ARV (Antiretroviral ) treatments , the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) predicts that by mid-decade nearly half of the expected 1.5 million Americans living with HIV will be 50 or older. The interaction of aging and HIV contributes to injury to multiple organs resulting into the transformation of HIV infection into a complex chronic disease. Over the last few years several organizations, including the Academy of HIV Medicine, the American Geriatrics Society, and the AIDS Community Research Initiative have collaborated to address the clinical management of older persons with AIDS

Produced by the HIV and Aging Consensus Project, this document consists of strategies formulated beginning in 2009 from clinicians caring for older HIV infected persons, and recognizes that in this rapidly evolving field new evidence may bolster or refute treatment strategies described.
