Living well through activity in care homes: The toolkit

An interactive toolkit developed by the British Association of Occupational Therapists and the College of Occupational Therapists.

The toolkit is a “practical resource designed to equip care homes with ideas and materials to provide a service focused on residents’ needs, preferences and activity choices, and to support residents, their family and friends and care home staff to shape the life of the home”.

There are sections intended for frontline staff as well as sections aimed at care home directors and managers. While recognizing the many demands on a staff member’s time in long term care, the toolkit provides activity recommendations for activities which can be over an hour in duration to active interactions for when you have less than five minutes to engage a resident in activity.
