The BC BPSD Algorithm is
an online, interactive tool (and mobile friendly) to support the
person-centered care of persons with behavioural and psychological symptoms of
dementia. The tool is evidence-based, and is intended to be used in
conjunction with the BC
Best Practice Guide for Accommodating and Managing Behavioural and
Psychological Symptoms of Dementia in Residential Care: A person-centered
interdisciplinary approach, released in 2012. It is a decision aid
and assessment tool with a focus on non-pharmacological and appropriate use of
antipsychotic drugs in long-term care. It can be used by long-term care staff
including physicians, nurses and allied health personnel.
The tool is separated into 2 parts. Part one consists of an
interdisciplinary decisional aid for clinical assessment; problem solving; and
care planning and evaluation. Part two is a reassessment tool for family
physicians and nurse practitioners, including: clinical assessment; medication
options; and care planning and evaluation. Throughout the assessments
there are tools that can be downloaded and printed for individual care plans.
