Creative
Spaces, created by the Sensory
Trust, is an innovative program that uses outdoor spaces and community
involvement to improve the lives of persons living with dementia in long-term
care. The objective of the program is to get residents with dementia
outside and participating in activities with young people and local volunteers
resulting in greater communication and social ties.
The program began in 2006 when the long-term care facility built
a dementia-friendly garden and invited the local community to participate in
its growth. From there, Creative Spaces generated a number of outdoor
activities that could be done with health care professionals or with community
members.
The website includes examples of
the outdoor activities, as well as details on a new artistic program that creates
videos from the poetry of the residents with dementia.
