This installment of “Get the Facts on Aging” from the University of Kansas, Merrill Advanced Studies Center, was written in collaboration with Dr. Susan Kemper, professor of psychology at the Gerontology Center in the Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies.
The three page handout addresses communication with nursing home residents, particularly the use of baby talk when communicating with seniors and includes an explanation of what elderspeak is, why it is harmful, and how caregivers can avoid communicating with residents in this way.
