This systematic review aimed to establish the clinical and cost effectiveness of an early age-related macular degeneration (AMD) screening programme.
The leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 60 years, the early stages of age-related macular degeneration cause little vision loss but the later stages of the disease consist of choroidal neovascularisation (wet) and geographic atrophy (dry) conditions that can lead to more rapid vision loss.
Authored by Karnon, J. et.al. and published in June 2008, this 145 page report and executive summary is number 12(27) in the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment (HTA) programme monograph series from the National Coordinating Centre for Health Technology Assessment (NCCHTA), part of the Wessex Institute at the University of Southam.
