Urgent Care Pathways for Older People with Complex Needs

Intended for health and social care professionals, this 20-page guidance was prepared by the Urgent Care Pathway Working Group and issued by the Department of Health in November 2007.

It offers a practical ambulance service and accident and emergency department urgent care pathway for older people with complex needs caused by falls, confusional state, or hip fracture. It identifies best clinical practice in these three areas and suggests a clear and auditable clinical care pathway. The document contains a foreword, contents, introduction (background and purpose), and references. Subjects covered include falls in older people, and the response of the ambulance service and the accident and emergency department to these events, confusional states and hip fractures in the elderly, and a suggested urgent care pathway and audit indicators.
