This clinical practice guideline on the management of patients with venous leg ulcers, which was originally published in 1998, has been updated by the Royal College of Nursing Institute and the Centre for Evidence Based Nursing, University of York. This second edition was published by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in September 2006. It provides recommendations on the following aspects of venous leg ulcer management: assessment; compression therapy; cleansing; debridement; dressings; drug treatments; pain assessment and relief; skin grafts and replacement; topical negative pressure; contact sensitivity; therapeutic ultrasound, electrotherapy and laser treatment; and prevention of recurrence of leg ulceration. There are also sections on education and training for leg ulcer care and on quality assurance for monitoring standards of care.
